Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on August 9th, 1963, in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. as well as a cousin of the singing sensation Dionne Warwick. When she was a little girl, Houston started singing professionally in the choir of her church. She sang backing vocals for Chaka Khosns 1978 single Im Every Woman with her mom. After that, she began to join the backing vocals of Jermaine, Lou Rawls, and her mother. Her work as the vocalist featured in New York funk group Material attracted the attention of several major record labels, including Arista and Arista, which she signed her contract in 1982, where she stayed the rest of her career. However, it is The Bodyguard of 1992 that made her one of the top-selling artists in history. The movie and her role in it was not appreciated, but the soundtrack as well as her version of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You was a hit for a few months in the charts, and she sold nearly 44 million singles and albums worldwide. In the same year, she got married to former New Edition star Bobby Brown with whom she was the sole parent of their child Bobbi Kristina Brown, born in March 1993.
